Welcome to the Gu Research Group at UC Berkeley! The Gu Research Group works at the intersection of mechanics, additive manufacturing, materials, and artificial intelligence. We aim to develop deep learning algorithms to accelerate multi-physics modeling and inverse design of tailored materials with specific functions and desired properties. Additionally, we aim to make additive manufacturing more accessible, economical, and ubiquitous. We harness tools such as advanced computational analysis, machine learning, and topology optimization to expand and revolutionize the field of smart additive manufacturing – printing what we need with minimal amount of material and creating more efficient functional, customizable designs. These advances will find applications in tough body armor and helmet designs, resilient and lightweight structural materials in extreme environments, soft robotics, biomedical devices, aerospace, among many others.
